Deputy secretary of state for Near East Affairs William
Burns affirmed, "The US Department of state is committed
to promoting human rights, democracy and the rule of law
in Libya". Mr. Burns also stated "Despite the
recent lifting of UN sanctions, U.S. bilateral sanctions
will remain in place until Libya addresses our serious concerns
with respect to its pursuit of WMD and means of delivery,
human rights, terrorism and its destructive role in African
conflicts". Mr. Burns's comments came from a letter,
which he sent at the request of Secretary Colin Powell to
Aly Abuzakuk, the Chairman of the board of the American
Libyan Freedom Alliance (ALFA).
ALFA is a Non-Government American organization (NGO) and
was founded by a group of Libyan Americans. It is headquartered
in Virginia and works within the American political system
to end the tyrant rule of Maumar ElGadafi and build a modern
democratic system of government in Libya. In addition ALFA
intends to work hard to bring to justice all those responsible
for human rights violations in Libya.
