Dear Honorable Member of Congress:
On November 6, 2003, President Bush accurately identified
tyranny as responsible for the spread of terrorism, and
vowed to mobilize the United States' resources to bring
an end to tyranny and to usher in an era of democracy and
freedom. Tyrants in many nations have blamed the west and
the United States in particular for the unbearable conditions
that they have created and imposed upon their countries.
They have instituted poverty and oppression as means of
national control. They have humiliated and dehumanized their
populations and created a state of hopelessness and despair
in many parts of the world, particularly in the Middle East,
where the prevalence of dictators is most visible.
President Bush acknowledged that some western nations had
given support to several tyrants, and might have even created
some of those monsters for short-term gains. While admitting
wrong doings in the past, he urged western democracies to
join hands with the United States to undo the wrong and
to set the Middle East on a road to freedom and democracy.
However, his call seems to have been largely ignored in
Europe as we witness a mad rush of European companies to
Libya to do business with the Libyan dictator, breathing
a new life in him, and providing him with more cash for
more terror inside and outside of Libya.
Most recently, a US congressional delegation announced
their intention to visit Libya and meet with Gaddafi, granting
him some degree of US legitimacy, which he has craved for
decades. Those delegates do not realize that they are undermining
the credibility of the United States and adding to the plight
of the Libyan people, who have suffered tremendously under
Gaddafi's tyranny. The most basic human rights have been
denied, freedom of expression is non-existent, membership
in any party is punishable by death. We remind members of
the delegation that elections are unheard of in Libya, and
many who called for such elections are languishing in Gaddafi's
jails, if they have not been executed. We ask the honorable
members of Congress to remember that the hands of Gaddafi
are smeared with the blood of 187 fellow Americans, victims
of Pan Am 103, not to mention the blood of thousands of
Libyans executed by the butcher, you are now honoring by
your visit.
Sincerely,
Mohamed M. Bugaighis, Ph.D.
