President Romano Prodi
B-1049, Brussels
Belgium
Dear President Prodi:
The mission of the American Libyan Freedom Alliance (ALFA)
is to inform and educate the American public and the international
community about the true nature of the Gadhafi regime. Although
Gadhafi's crimes have been largely confined to Libya, and
bordering countries, oil resources have enabled him to export
his terrorism to other places. Several European cities have
had first-hand experiences with Gadhafi's criminal activities
when several Libyan exiles were murdered in many European
cities. Recently, the mass murder of the passengers of the
American Pan Am 103 over Scotland, and the French UTA772
airliner over Niger have been in the world news. Gadhafi's
crimes and gross human rights violations have been documented
by various international organizations, most notably, Amnesty
International.
European leaders' embrace of Gadhafi, following his admission
to possession of WMD, have eroded Europe's credibility and
belied its commitment to democracy and freedom. It is obvious
to us, members of ALFA, and the rest of the world community,
that Europe's leaders put short-term gains before the lives
of 5 million Libyans, since business with Gadhafi will avail
him more money for more oppression at home and mischief
abroad.
Europe's leaders might seek to justify their embrace of
Libya's tyrant on the basis of his willingness to rid Libya
of its WMD. We take issue with this erroneous conclusion.
Gadhafi's admission and subsequent willingness to cease
his program of manufacturing WMD were a result of relentless
pressure by USA and Britain, which ultimately forced him
to accept his responsibility for downing the American Pan
Am 103 and the French UTA772 airliner. Also seeing the fate
of Saddam Hussein was "the straw that broke the camel's
back," which resulted in a succession of concessions
to the international community. As a man of violent history,
Gadhafi, has not changed because of Europe's gentle persuasion,
but because he saw a potential of a violent end similar
to that of Iraq's tyrant.
Gadhafi is a tyrant who can never be trusted, and is incapable
of changing his old habits. In a very recent speech, he
confessed contempt for representative democracy, and he
insisted that he would pursue his oppressive "revolutionary"
ways, which have caused so much havoc and terror throughout
the world. We urge all European leaders, in conjunction
with American leaders, to exert more pressure to end Libya's
decades of tyranny and oppression. It is only through a
democratic government in Libya, that the country and the
rest of the world community can expect peace and mutual
prosperity.
Sincerely,
Mohamed M. Bugaighis, Ph.D.
